A fundamental difficulty for the majority of people that are interested in building green lies in the fact that most people do not know what products are considered green or where these products can be purchased. Although there are directories that list green building products and their manufacturers, these directories are typically national in focus and do not point individuals in the direction of local suppliers. The Metro Detroit Green Building Resource Directory aims to fill this fundamental information gap.

The products listed in the Materials section of the Directory have been screened for their "greenness" based on comprehensive environmental criteria. In particular, the editors of the directory focused attention on whether the products:

• Contribute to a healthy, safe indoor environment
• Reduce environmental impacts during renovation, construction, or demolition
• Provide a green alternative to problematic, conventional materials
• Are made from recycled or rapidly renewable content
• Facilitate easy, healthy, and affordable operations and maintenance
